I found, after reading Ms. Sabia's response, that we both have similar views regarding Colin Powell's memories of the Vietnam War. Like Ms. Sabia, I feel sorry for the soldiers. One cannot blame them entirely because they were made to think that the Vietnamese were after them. How many people, when faced with the belief that someone wants to kill them, would not take the necessary actions to protect their own life? I believe that the United States played a large role in making these boys think that they were forced to kill these people. In a sense, they are victims, too. I am sure that they did not want to kill the Vietnamese, but when they were told it was to protect their own lives, they did not see any other way. I feel sorry for both the soldiers and the Vietnamese; the Vietnamese died terrible deaths and the soldiers must live in a guilt-filled hell because of atrocities they did not want to committ.
