Through class discussions and class readings, it is quite obvious that the violence of killing exerted from the American soldiers during the Vietnam War was more of a survival tool than of conscious wrongdoing. However, this does not justify their actions nor does it explain why they deliberately tortured some people. Colin Powell's first extract explains that if a possible MAM was spotted the pilot of the helicopter would shot in front of him and if that possible MAM moved he would then be shot. Common sense and reflexes would cause anyone to move, regardless of whether or not that person possessed hostile intent. Therefore, these MAM killings were obviously irrelevant; but, when it comes down to kill or be killed then methods such as the MAM killings would have to be engaged.
