I think that by you saying that Powell's "kill-or-be-killed...." quote was a "load of crap" is a bit inaccurate. To say that is to contradict human behavior. The instinct to survive is the single most powerful thought inbedded in man. To say that quote was used as a cover-up for the crimes committed in Vietnam (My Lai in particular) is wrong and in a sense unfair to those people their. They were programmed to think beforehand to think that this was going to be a you-or-them type situation and once that it was established that it wasen't, the officers should have stepped in and done something to curtail it. The soldiers were doing what was expected of them; their jobs and to stay alive.
