I find this curious... Between America losing the war and the destruction we brought to the country, I would have thought we'd be remembered for the next hundred or so years as a great enemy of Vietnam and the Vietnamese people. In terms of ideology, I suppose it is consistent with the idea that Vietnam did try to befriend us again after the war (or so I remember reading somewhere), but even if the Vietnamese politicians were ready to forgive and forget, I would not have assumed the same from the general population.
