After reading Jenns article i must say that i agree with everything she has to say. I liked her article and chose to reply to it because its real! She does not try to bullshit the class about her materialist side. Since this class started many people have shared their views on how bad the United States is for engaging in capitalistic practices. Well, like jenn, i agree that i enjoy my standard of living and would not passively give it up. i understand that the extent that we have gone to, in an effort to keep this economic power has at times been horific. But it enables our public certain social mobility that might not otherwise be available. Although i think capitalism can and should exist without Imperialism, that ideology may never become reality.
I also agree with her notion that money talks and well you know whats walks. In politics, there is big business. In fact without this business our political istitutions would crumble. Not to say that a government could not exist without big business, but not on the large scale that we have created. If you have dreams to someday become president you better make friends in major indusrial markets. This means special interest groups. they have the money to help you win a campaign, get air time and meet the masses over the telivision.(Hey, i thought we had freedom of speech, I guess not, since we now have to pay for it.) Anyway if your want to get ellected, be ready to pass legislation in favor of these groups.
Jenn also said that capitalism can exist without Imperialism. I also think that it can exist, but not flourish. And if it cant get the max profits, doesent that go against the ideals of capitalism in the first place. In a perfect society we can all have what we want, at no cost to anybody else. But since we don't live in a perfect society, i want to be the one above the next guy.
