Once again the suppressive nature of imperialism can be seen in these articles. Something that Professor Furr said in class on Tuesday struck me as an interesting way of possibly tying the Vietnam War to imperialism. He stated that if Communism spread into Southwest Asia (or anywhere else for that matter), it might have raised the labor costs. Going by that reasoning it is easy to see why the U.S. would be against Communism especially if it would mean profit loss. So, was the Vietnam War really in favor of the innocents and poor? Unfortunately, it doesn’t look that way.

The capitalists have been pursuing land through Europe, Canada and eventually into the Far East for nearly centuries. It is more recent that imperialistic nations, (U.S. way up there), have been plundering land in poorer regions of Southeast Asia in search of profit and being very successful. In the late 60’s, profits really started to sour for the United States and with it’s greedy imperialistic attitude wanted to hold onto what they knew would be a fortune. Amazing that this was the same time that Communism was trying to be defeated in that area. Coincidence, or just the U.S. way of making Vietnam dependent on us. It is amazing that we would be fighting harder the same time that profits were rising. I think there is a connection.
