After reading Lori's article titled "At What Cost?" it really brought to my attention how capitalism is ruining and depleting the Third World nations. I truly understand the mentality of a capitalist to seek high profits, but why do they have to strip a poor nation of its resources, labor, and take over their economy? The idea of invading these poor nations where farming and growing crops is the profession and implementing highly industrialized factories to produce mass production is beyond me. I agree with Lori when she stated that these people are farmers and peasants and basically don't have the knowledge to adapt to an industrialized society. The fact that we exploit these people in Third World nations for the sake of producing goods to be exported to us is truly an immoral, capitalist adventure that should be re-examined by the government. The capitalists' look at this situation as a means of ultimate profit, but fail to see the future consequences of depleted resources and exploitation of workers who slave themselves to produce a product that costs more than they make in six months.

It appears that our government closes its eyes when it comes to the issue of imperialism and the immoral tactics performed by capitalists. The idea of corporations heading over to Southeast Asia for low wages and leaving the American working man out on the streets unemployed will eventually lead this country to an economic downfall. Not only do these corporations put their greed and wallets first, but also they are heartless enough to have any remorse of leaving a working man's family hungry or needy. I could understand the United States being a capitalist nation, but being imperialistic by going to Third World nations for cheap labor and disregarding the American economy and people is truly heartless. When will the United States government realize that domestic capitalist expansion would be more morally correct than going overseas and building corporations in the Third World nations? I can understand that the capitalists' profits would not increase so much in the U.S. because of the wages that would be demanded by American workers, but at least economic development and employment would be taken care of with the idea of keeping business affairs within the United States. Truthfully, I don't know how capitalists' can live with themselves after putting thousands of American out of work for simply paying other people low wages and selling the product for ten times its actually worth. Someday, the United States government and corporations will have to make a decision on continuing stripping essential raw materials through imperialism or forgetting about reaching high profits and employing American workers.
