I completely agree with you. It is so sad, that we, as Americans, are called a 'superpower.' We are supposedly the most technologically advanced country, and while we are so advanced, we behave so childish. It is sad that we use personal profit and gain as symbols of self worth in this country. We exploit and hurt others to gain more of a name, a status, another notch on the belt.
I couldn't agree more that the countries of most importance to us are the poor countries. they are the easiest to take advantage of. After reading the atrocities that go on in these Third World countries, I was apalled. The United States steals 50 to 100% of their natural resources, only to use that for their own gain. It is sad to understand that the government you have been living unde for years is as corrupt as it is. Profit is the only thing important to the United States.
To make things worse, we actually act as if we care about these poor countries. We put on the facade that we want to help these countries in economic peril. We play the good guys, going in to give jobs and advantages to the poor. The only advantages being reaped are the advantages by the United States.
The role of racism, as you pointed out, also has alot to do with imperilaism. The facts about the black workers in the article was astonishing! I was shocked, and I don't know why I was so shocked, that these minorities only made a fraction of the amount that whites did and that they had to pay more. It is apalling that the United States government treats people this way.
A country that is supposed to stand for freedom, democracy and independence is showing the total opposite by the treatment of these thrid World countries. Instead of fighting for rights and independence, the United States just keeps on oppressing these people, in their own country none the less.
