We’ve been doing a lot of discussion about imperialism and capitalism in the US, but we really have not done more than touch upon racism a few times. To say that capitalism in the USA is very deeply rooted in racist ideology would not be too much of a stretch. I am not talking about the image that we have that America is the only country that has partaken in slavery and racism in its history. I am talking about the attitude that Westerners have that allow us to go into countries like Vietnam and decimate people, crops, and ways of life in the name of democracy. I am talking about how it is reflected in our imperialistic policies. Please, correct me if I’m wrong, but we do not go into France or the UK and build factories with subhuman working conditions and wages that are ridiculous. We do not go into Westernized countries-we go into the 3rd world countries where the people have no possible way of dealing with us on our level. We go places where they would probably have to check off the “other” box on a college application where it asks for your race. Our uselessness for those who are not of similar skin color is evident in our mistreatment of them throughout history. Slavery has existed since the beginning of time, but only in the newest “Westernized” societies have we limited it to issues of skin color. When looking at our dealings overseas, it is evident that ethnocentrism is deeply rooted into our foreign policies.
