Economic Pursuits: Are We Going to Far?

The thing that struck me the most about this article was the descriptions of the exploitation of the working class in other countries. Perhaps this is the nastiest side of imperialism. Just the notion of the U.S. going into a small third world nation to take advantage of the “cheap” borderline cheap labour angers me.

The article mentions accounts of workers making low wages all over the world. It specifically states a car manufacture in South Korea, making a very small wage for the amount of work that is being done.

The other element of this exploitation is the use of the “poor countries’” natural resources. This is another way the U.S. is taking advantage of the poorer countries. This taking of natural resources is even after the U.S. declared it would hold onto 50-100 of select natural resources around the world.

The U.S. has taken advantage of these countries. We come in with our guns and say we are going to help them, but in the long run we just have an economic interest. Is it worth sending our “innocent” citizens to fight a war that will only benefit the capitalists? No. I realize our economic standing requires us to do this. That is what makes us the “most powerful nation in the world” but is this because we are a country with great national pride, that is in favour of imperialism, or are we a country that is just milking off the misfortunes of smaller undeveloped countries.
