Why were we involved in Vietnam? We've discussed several reasons over the past month. Was it to stop the spread of communism, or maybe to protect a foreign market in Vietnam? There are several points raised in "The Economics of Imperialism in Vietnam." One arguement is that the US engages in economic imperialism all over the world, but there are no big investments in Vietnam by large US corporations. These corporations depend on overseas holdings to expand. After WWII countries like Japan and Canada were racing to develop their economies to compete with the US. This was a reason for US expansion into small, poorer countries.

After WWII the Marshall Plan gave aid to European countries, they had to agree to give up 5% of local currency for raw materials, and purchases, and open European colonies to US capitalist investment.Today, US aid requires poor countries to hand over major resources to US business in exchange. All the while, US profits soared with foreign investment compared to domestic growth in profit.Foreign investment does however help countries develop, but how much of that was going on in Vietnam?
