After reading the article, "The Economics of Imperialism in Vietnam," I got the impression that the United States takes over these Third World nations to spread its empire while depleting these country's resources at the same time. We convert agricultural areas into areas of industrial action for the purpose of capitalists' reaching their goal of ultimate profit. Not only don't we compensate the workers for their slave labor, but also we pay them low wages, which doesn't assist them in their standard of living. There was an argument that foreign investment doesn't yield much profit for the capitalists as the main objective is to help out poor countries which in my mind is a fabrication of covering up the real truth. Corporations invade these nations for the sole reason of achieving profit, which is why they set up the factories in places like Indonesia, Korea, and Vietnam. The low wages, an abundance of raw materials, and the space for industrial expansion are the main reasons why the U.S. sets up its empire in these areas as opposed to other countries. With the rate of profit clearly much higher in the "poor" countries, its clear the intentions of capitalists to conquer these countries with the idea of mass production of their product rests on their minds. Even though the United States empire is expanding to the Third World, when will they realize that the unemployment rates are rising because of these corporations going overseas? Also, the fact that these major corporations left for cheaper wages leaves a tremendous tax burden on the American people, which eventually could lead us to an economic downfall. In my own personal view, we can have capitalism without imperialism if we want to succeed as a powerful nation without jeopardizing our economy. The profits might be so incredible right now, but capitalists have to look at the long-term effects that imperialism will have on the United States between tax burdens and unemployment.
