My overall impression of this article comes down to dollar signs. I think the author made a lot of points by sighting almost exact amounts for how much the US and the world is making off of imperialism, aka exploitation. In 1968 alone, the US had 120 billion dollars in assets and half of that was direct investments. It was made clear that the money is not made in exports but in our foreign investments. Unfortunately, the only people benefitting from this is .5 percent of the population. That means neither you nor I will see any of these ridiculous profits. The US is not only looking out for its monetary benefit, it also has to make sure its policies are being carried out in the countries it dominates. The US has made itself a world power by investing its money in small third world countries and then using that pull to control and carry out its own personal agenda. The US started in what we now know of as other "industrialized" countries, but as they made their way up the corporate ladder we had to move on to less developed shores. Racism had been pointed to in this artivle as a way for the man to continue holding us down. Until the working class organizes and educates itself on a widescale level the government will take advantage of them. There is no reason why white families ahould be making double the average of most black families. This is not only a black problem, white people need to involve themselves as well because there does not appear to be any end to how much the government will take from us. The bottom line is imperialism may not hold the benefits the government would have us believe. Supposedly imperialism is actually causing unemployment in the countries we are exploiting, the more we invest the lower the standard of living is in these countries. Bottom line, we need to act a bit more humane and at least better the working conditions for these poor people we reap our economy from.
