Hey Moose. I completely agree with your assessment of Chitty's lecture as well as your conclusions on US action in Vietnam. One question which should have been asked, I think, deals with his perception of soldier morale on his second tour. Although he made some distinction of those who wanted to see action and those who didn't, he never addressed the possibility of ideological contestation in the minds of the soldiers till after the war. As we have learned, there was a great amount of subversion and dissension in Vietnam itself and not just the anti-war movement back "home." Chitty, although a spokesman for these anti-imperialist thoughts, seems to have learned these ideas only after returning home. Nevertheless, the fact that he and thousands of others were sent into the meat-grinder, whether on land or at sea, became all the more real in his lecture. What we have learned throughout this semester was finally brought to our "home" in his talk. Historical events have become the most problematic issues. Thus, our notion of who we are and where we are going in terms of nationhood or individuality is forever called into question!
