Elizabeth A. Hutchinson Agent Orange 12/6/99

I agree with the point you are making about Agent Orange. I was glad the Mr. Chitty discussed it in his speech, I wanted to hear about it from someone that was in the Vietnam War. He is very true in saying that the war is not over. The many men that came back from the war were affected by Agent Orange, something they have to deal with for the rest of their lives. I did hear talk about a similar occurrence during the Gulf War. On that topic, I was also surprised that Mrs. Chitty denounced the US’s claim that only few were killed during the Gulf War. What about the men that will die from cancer, due to the chemicals that were used during the war? On a side not, possibly something unrelated to the Vietnam war, but I think it gives a good perspective of how powerful this "Agent Orange" chemical is. Mr. Chitty said the main chemical found in the solution is Dioxin. From past environmental activism, I learned that Dioxin is the chief chemical released from incinerators. For all those who live in south Jersey may know what I am talking about. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) puts a cap on how much Dioxin can be released into the air each year. This chemical can instantly create neuro-damage to a child, or even kill a child, if ingested. Dioxin has been known to cause cancer and birth-defects. This brings a question to my mind: If the U.S,. is so concerned for the affects of Agent Orange, how do they care about the American public if they are letting this harmful chemical get into our water, air and soil?
