Program Overview

The Industrial & Organizational concentration is designed to prepare persons for work in business and industry as professional specialists in the application of psychological knowledge and techniques in organizations or to prepare persons for continued education in the field of Industrial Organizational Psychology or related fields (Organizational Behavior or Human Resources).  The program draws from many areas of psychology especially testing, statistics, experimental design, learning, motivation, and interpersonal relations.

Program Admissions & Requirements
We are a rolling admissions program!  You can begin your application process as soon as you are ready.

All applicants must meet the admission requirements for graduate study at Montclair State University.  Please refer to the Office of Graduate Studies for specific application requirements and instructions.  In addition, the applicant must have:

bullet 12 undergraduate credits in psychology including a course in statistics and a laboratory course in experimental psychology
bullet achieve acceptable scores on the general GRE and Psychology subject GRE
bullet and be approved by the departmental committee.

IV. Electives: Psychology: Maximum of 6 credits
To be selected with the approval of the Graduate Advisor.

V. Electives: Other Departments: Maximum of 6 credits
To be selected with the approval of the Graduate Advisor. 
 

VI. Comprehensive Examination: Can only be taken with a minimum 3.0GPA and at least 18 credits completed in the required courses and three electives.

Industrial Organizational Psychology Information Sites (external)

Society for Industrial Organizational Psychology (www.siop.org)- This is Division 14 of the American Psychological Association. They have a great website that includes job listings, their publication (www.siop.org/tip/TIP.html) , and information on how to get into graduate school.

METRO (www.MetroAppPsych.com) - The Metropolitan New York Association for Applied Psychology. This is a great organization that provides much information on meetings, jobs and internship in I/O Psychology in New York.

American Psychological Association (www.apa.org)- This is one of the two premier psychological associations in the U.S.  A.P.A. publishes Journal of Applied Psychology (JAP), the top I/O journal.  From this site you can get JAP table of contents and abstracts.  The A.P.A. Monitor also sometimes runs issues dedicated to I/O psychology (trywww.apa.org/monitor/ and go to the July 1998 issue).

American Psychological Society (www.psychologicalscience.org) - The other major psychological organization, this site also has information on jobs, publications, and meetings in applied psychology.
 

Workforce Magazine (formerly Personnel Journal) (www.workforceonline.com)- This is an applied magazine that often has articles and information about organizational information and human resource management.  You can download entire articles off of this site (www.workforceonline.com/research/. You may have to put in a password).

Society for Human Resource Management (www.shrm.org) This is the major human resource organization. The site has information on jobs, advertising, publications,. conferences, and a lot more.  This is more of an "applied" organization.  You can get many practitioner articles from this site (www.shrm.org/hrmagazine/articles)
