"Our modern revelation may be a depressing revelation, but at least it is a demythologizing revelation.  If the world is terrible, at least we know that our fathers were fools to think otherwise, and that everything they believed and cherished was a lie, or at best superstition" (Hilary Putnam, Human Face, p.136).

"If we believe in the creative effect of contact and collision, connection and exchange, then we require a medium, a way of writing which will live with the impact and conflict of communication between ideas" (Myerson, Rhetoric, Reason and Society, 1994:4).

Jocelyn Demers Assignment #4 Doublespeak terms I know some of these are hardly doublespeak terms and a bit of a stretch…I hope you are humored! Some of them though, I feel could qualify as new doublespeak terms.

1.)"net"- a slang term for the internet or networks.

2.)"bank"- a place where you store your money or where information is stored.

3.)"jihad"-Islam word meaning the spiritual struggle against evil. Jihad is the duty of all mainstream Muslims, or Sunnites. There are four ways they may fulfill a jihad: by the heart, the tongue, the hand, and the sword. These refer to the inner, spiritual battle of the heart against vice, passion, and ignorance; spreading the word of Islam with one's tongue; choosing to do good and avoiding evil with one's hand; and waging war against non-Muslims with the sword. Throughout all the political struggles the word has taken the meaning of one who is Islam.

4.)"no-fly zone"-an area in Iraq where no flight is allowed.

5.)"Ectasy"-a feeling of pure enjoyment or a dangerous mind-mood altering drug.

6.)"Napster"-an internet corporation that allows individuals to share music in the form of MP3 files in a community or a method of violating copyright laws and robbing recording artists of their earnings.

7.)"on-line"-engaging in internet activity, or standing in line?

8.)"e-brokers"-people that engage in the trading of stocks via the world wide web.

9.)"telecommunications"-any form of communication used via the telephone line. Great advances have been made to create wireless or celluar communications and online communications?

10.)"digital"-a form or type of cellular communication signals.
