O'Maggio states in the chapter on writing (Becoming Proficient in Writing, p.319) that "most scholars agree that good writing in any language involves knowledge of the conventions of written discourse in that culture..." If that is the case, then why is it that Valdes et al (1984), cited in O'Maggio (1993:333), outline a lesson plan that clearly follows writing conventions of the English language: "Etapa uno (antes de redactar), etapa dos (la redaccion), and etapa tres (la revision)? See also the "episode" exercise included (p.334). Is this the process that native speakers of Latin American and Iberian Spanish use in composing? Please ask some of the experts in this area: Drs. Valentin Soto, Rogelio Zapata, and Beatriz Cortes-Green. (Send them an e-mail message via alpha: sotov@alpha.montclair.edu zapatar@alpha.montclair.edu.)
