Luis, I was comfortable with the definition of a morpheme being the smallest unit in a language, even though some don't have a true "meaning". However, with your definition, can't we say that any combination of two or more letters IS a morpheme? I mean, if they don't have to be "meaningful", can't we say that, for example, the combination "mea" in the word "meaningful" IS a morpheme? I understand you're trying to expand the limits of Donna S's definition of a morpheme, but by eliminating the word "meaningful", I think you're leaving it too open...without a limit...but then again, i haven't taken the Language and Linguistics course your refer to in your definition. Also, what is an allomorph? (perhaps this is what I don't understand about your definition) Thanks in advance, CARLA
