I also agree with Luis and Donna...I do have a cousin whose parents don't speak English and she was born here in the US. When she was growing up, she pretty much heard Portuguese at home and it was only later (when she went to school) that she earned English. Today, at 9 years of age, Vanessa not only does she speak Portuguese fairly well, she has also mastered the English language. I think that if she was only exposed to English at first, I don't think she would be able to pick up the Portuguese later on in life because she would have less exposure to it...I hope Vanessa's experience helps!
