While I am not very religious, I am a firm believer in religious freedom. After all, this country was settled by people who wanted to practice their religion and customs without interference from a governing power. I suppose this idea should carry through today. It seemed to me that a "Catholic Hospital" should be able to follow its own policies, alarming as they may be, just in the same a catholic church should be practice its own religious policies.
My biggest criticism is that these hospitals are funded by tax money. If they had to exist on their own funding or tax money from only the catholic citizens, then I suppose these hospitals would find it difficult to operate. But if a catholic community wants to support a catholic hospital and reflect a policy that can "exercise conscience" then so be it. I don't suppose I'd want to live there.
