I was a bit surprised to find in the text reading that there were in fact some egalitarian societies that do exist. What also struck me as unorthodox was the Tongan society, where females were the dominating force.
To summarize these tribes and chiefdoms, many common themes shared among them were either to one extreme or the other (such as sexual exploitation as opposed to monogamy - women being relegated to the home versus women partaking in land ownership, etc. There was a lot of diversity.
