The common theme among Foraging societies, Tribal societies, and Chiefdoms is that where women were able to control some economic activity, they retained their autonomy. Once women are relegated to a subservient role (e.g., taking care of children and the elderly), they become dependent on men for their survival. They cease to have any bargaining power. Chiefdoms are further complicated by the existence of social stratification (e.g., the nobles, the commoners, the slaves).
